Obituary for James "Buddy" Thornton
Mr. James “Buddy” Thornton of Concord, Arkansas, departed this life on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at the age of 76. He was born August 13, 1940, at Widener, Arkansas, the son of Tomas James and Offie Mae (Marcy) Thornton.
Mr. Thornton was a graduate of Augusta High School, and a United States Army veteran. He was a truck driver, driving for Walmart over 20 years. During his truck driving years, he was known by his radio handle, “Popcorn”.
Mr. Thornton was a volunteer fire fighter while in Grubbs, Arkansas, and a constable. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing softball, and spending time on the lake at Heber Springs. He especially loved being with his family on the back deck.
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by his wife, Carol F. (McClure) Thornton; an infant son, Perry James Thornton; two brothers, Thomas Leon Thornton and Eugene Thornton; and one sister, Judy Turner.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Thornton and wife, Alesa, of Grubbs, and Tommy Thornton and wife, Paula, of Benton; one daughter, Terri Critcher and husband, Michael, of Grubbs; a special niece, Melissa Morris of Delavan, Illinois; two brothers, William Lyvone Thornton and wife, Loretta, of Bono, and Steve Thornton and wife, Wilma, of Brookland; three sisters, Carolyn Fields of Oil City, Louisiana, Maxine Miser and husband, Leon, of Newark, and Delores Autry of Newark; eleven grandchildren, Brent Thornton and wife, Leah, Colton Thornton and wife, Janine, Trey Thornton and wife, Jena, Jennifer Critcher Brunner and husband, Lewis, Ali Critcher Carey and husband, Joe, Keicha Thornton, Meghan Pectol, Addison Thornton, Aiden Thornton, Kandace Pharis Moldan, and Tristen Pharis Gates and husband, Nicky; ten great-grandchildren, Kaden, Eli, Sydney Jo, Emily, Ty, Maxden, Avery, Lulah, Alya, and Jaxson James; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit at the funeral home, Monday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Ballew’s Chapel Cemetery.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers Brent Thornton, Colton Thornton, Trey Thornton, Lewis Brunner, Joe Carey, and Rick Lewis. Honorary pallbearers are Aiden Thornton, Avery Brunner, Kaden Pharis, Jaxson James Carey, and Eli Thornton.
